Modern Dance FAQ

What is Modern dance?

Modern dance is a foundational movement style that developed as a rebellion against classical ballet. It emphasizes grounded movement, contraction and release, breath, floor work, and emotional expression.

What is the difference between Modern and Contemporary dance?

Modern dance is a structured technique with specific methods developed by pioneers like Martha Graham and José Limón. It focuses on grounded movement and technique-based training.

Contemporary dance blends multiple styles including Modern, Ballet, and Jazz. It is more fluid and evolving, often focusing on musical interpretation and creative expression rather than strict technique.

Do I need ballet experience to take Modern?

Ballet experience can help, but it is not required. Many dancers begin Modern without prior training and develop strong technique through foundational exercises.

What should I wear to Modern class?

Fitted dancewear such as leggings and a leotard or athletic top is recommended. Classes are typically taken barefoot to allow for full articulation of the feet.
